Australia's Most Popular Karate Gi: Why Over 300 Dojos Trust the Zett Lightweight

by ZettSports on May 31, 2026

What Makes a Good Karate Gi?

Before diving into the Zett specifically, it's worth understanding what separates a great gi from a poor one. There are four things that matter:

  • Fabric weight and blend — heavier cotton is durable but slow-drying; a poly-cotton blend gives you the best of both
  • Stitching quality — double-stitching at stress points determines how long the gi lasts
  • Shrinkage — many imported gis shrink significantly after the first wash
  • Fit range — Australian dojos need uniforms that work from tiny kids to adults

The Zett Lightweight Karate Gi — Construction Breakdown

The Zett Lightweight Karate Gi is made from a 35% cotton / 65% polyester blend. This specific ratio is the sweet spot for Australian training conditions — cotton gives it the traditional feel and breathability, while the polyester content keeps it lightweight, fast-drying, and resistant to shrinkage.

The jacket features a reinforced collar and double-stitched seams throughout. The drawstring pants have an elastic waistband — a detail parents especially appreciate, since it eliminates fiddling with a tie cord during rushed pre-class changes.

Who Is It For?

Children Starting Karate

The Zett Lightweight is the most popular choice for children's karate in Australia. It's affordable enough that parents aren't devastated when a child grows three sizes in a year. The lightweight fabric means kids aren't overheating under hot dojo lights. Sizing goes down to a 90cm option, fitting most kids aged 4–5.

Adult Beginners

For adults starting karate for the first time, spending $150+ on a premium gi before you know if you'll stick with the sport makes little sense. The Zett Lightweight gives you a proper, dojo-ready uniform at $38. Most students find they simply never need to upgrade.

Dojo Bulk Orders

This is where the Zett really shines. Priced at $38 and available in every size from children's 000 to adult 7, dojo instructors can stock a range of sizes to sell to new students directly — no waiting on international shipping.

Sizing Guide — Getting It Right

The Zett Lightweight uses height-based sizing, which eliminates the guesswork:

Size Code Height (cm) Best For
00000 90 cm Very young children (approx. 4–5 years)
0000 100 cm Children approx. 5–6 years
000 110 cm Children approx. 6–7 years
00 120 cm Children approx. 7–9 years
0 130 cm Children approx. 9–11 years
1 140 cm Children approx. 11–13 years
2 150 cm Teens or small adults
3–7 160–200+ cm Adults

General rule: size for current height, not expected growth. The poly-cotton blend has minimal shrinkage, so you don't need to size up for washing.

Washing and Care Instructions

  1. Machine wash cold or warm (up to 40°C) — hot water accelerates fading and shrinkage
  2. Turn the jacket inside-out before washing to preserve the white colour
  3. Hang dry in shade — tumble drying on high heat wears out the poly content faster
  4. Iron on medium heat if needed — the polyester content makes it relatively crease-resistant
  5. Air out after every session rather than stuffing it wet into a bag

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Zett Karate Gi shrink?
Minimal shrinkage. The 65% polyester content stabilises the fabric. Washing cold and hang-drying will keep it true to size over years of use.

Is it competition legal?
For most recreational and dojo-level competition in Australia, yes. The Zett Lightweight is used extensively for state and national recreational competitions.

What's the difference between the white and black gi?
The construction is identical. The black gi is used in some styles (notably Kyokushin) and for senior students in certain dojos. When in doubt, white is the universal standard for any new student.

Can I use this for Taekwondo?
Technically yes, but Taekwondo uses a dobuk (a V-neck style uniform) — a karate gi at a TKD class would look out of place. We have dedicated Taekwondo uniforms that are a better fit.
